Yesterday I stopped.
My gas tank was completely and utterly empty. I had nothing left to give to anyone. I closed my computer. I left the dishes in the sink. I left the the laundry in the baskets. I left the mail on the counter. I left emails unanswered. I left my to do list undone. I laid in my hammock and did nothing but listen to the wind rustling the giant tree in my backyard while two of my dogs ran and played. I pushed away all the “shoulds” and just breathed. And it was glorious. We all need to stop a little more.

“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorns have roses.”
⠀⠀ I’m reminded of this quote I once saw on the side of a building in Cape Town every time my rose bushes start to bloom. ⠀⠀ It’s an important perspective to consider, especially today when so many things feel as prickly and painful and frustrating as thorns. ⠀⠀ All of those thorns are balanced and softened by the presence and existence of the beautiful blooms. ⠀⠀ How can you find a way to reframe the thorns in your life right now? Four or five years ago we tried our hand at gardening. Turns out that we are much better at tending to pets than we are at tending to a garden.
⠀⠀ But every year the strawberries return. ⠀⠀ Without any effort from us, they awaken and grace us with their beauty. ⠀⠀ Droughts. ⠀⠀ Frosts. ⠀⠀ Hurricanes. ⠀⠀ Complete and total neglect. ⠀⠀ They persist. ⠀⠀ Today this strawberry, the first from the forgotten bunch for this year, reminds me that we all have everything we need inside of us already. ⠀⠀ Like these strawberries, we can persist and continue to grow, even when no one believes in us, we feel forgotten, or the odds are stacked against us. ⠀⠀ Grow. |
Mental healthNow, more than ever, we all need a little support to help get us through the rough spots. With all the pressures of life, it can be a challenge to find time to not only take care of yourself but also to truly understand who you even are anymore. Archives
